More than ever before in history parents are looking for other options to meet their children’s educational needs and are turning to home schooling instead of using private schools or the public school system. The advantages for children and parents alike in homeschool definitely outweigh the drawbacks. Prior to making that choice, there are specific issues you should know about, which will be covered here.

One reason that many people go for homeschooling is that the teacher to student ratio is 30 to 1 in many classrooms. Most cities have an even worse problem. Personalized instruction is just not possible with this many kids, making it tough for children that need extra help to get by. All children learn at different levels and have different skills – that is why learning in a large classroom setting is difficult for most. In a homeschooling program, children learn at their own pace, and you can tend to the needs of your kids individually. An example of this would be your child having a problem where extra attention is needed – they can get that information from you immediately. If it is an easy problem, you can answer the question in just a few minutes and move on to next section – no problem! In this way, homeschooling is significantly much more efficient than public schools.

While school provides many resources for learning, it can also be a limiting environment. When you home school your kids, you don’t have to keep them at home -you can take them on all kinds of day trips to expose them to various environments. Aside from cultural resources such as libraries and museums, it can be educational for kids to visit other neighborhoods and even do everyday things like go shopping with you. Overall, home schooling can enable you to show your children more aspects of the world than he or she would see being in school all day.

Being a teacher is often a challenging job, and when you’re a parent home schooling your child, it can be even more challenging. As much as you love your kids, are you prepared to spend much of the day with them, every day? This includes times when they may be having trouble with their assignments, or may be refusing to cooperate at all. Home schooling demands a lot of patience from parents, and you are playing several roles at once. You have to motivate your kids, teach them and, when necessary, discipline them to make sure they are actually applying themselves. Not all parents are able to do all of this every day, so you should be honest with yourself and consider if it’s something you’ll be able to do.

There are many good reasons to choose home schooling, but it’s not right for everyone. If you consider all of the pros and cons of homeschooling and decide that it’s the way you want to go, then you should avail yourself to all of the information and resources that are now available on this topic. Home schooling is not exactly mainstream, but it’s a choice more parents are making all the time.
